More or Less 04/09/09 – How Many Illegal Downloader’s In the UK? The Facts

image More or Less radio show covered a very applicable topic about how statistics are being completely bent and are being used to control public opinion.  There are some slightly hearty and fun topics such as a formula for “the best way to dunk a biscuit” and “the best day to shop before Christmas” to the more serious issues such as “the number of illegal downloaders and file sharers”.  Certainly a perfect example of government lobbying by the phonographic industry (the music industry).  What was found is actually quite appalling and says a lot as to the quality of the press coverage on this, and the way statistics is complete rubbish unless carried out properly and in an unbiased manner. 7 million downloaders quoted by the Strategic Advisory Board for Intellectual Property Policy.

Oliver Hawkins goes onto investigate about how the so called 7 million illegal downloaders in the United Kingdom was found, and how it was calculated.

Latte Art – Worth Learning?

image Latte art is something that i reckon the majority of people have either never heard of or have never given a seconds thought to.  I never did until recently but now i can see the enjoyment of it.  I’m still appalling at it, but it is pretty fun to do.  Wiki How has a good “how to” on learning how to latte art though there are plenty of great guides all over the net which offer their won tips. To be honest, considering the amount of coffee everyone drinks, there is plenty of opportunity to practice.

Why you ask?

Well personally I offer coffee pretty regularly when i have guests. Plus we all know that it’s nice to have something from someone which looks like a little more time and care has been spent preparing it. (I emphasise looks like).  So if you’re using it as something to make that girl you’ve brought home (whey) just that little more impressed, or maybe just making someone you’ve been with for a while feel a little more special.  This kind of thing is fun to learn, takes seconds when you are good, is creative, and is imagepretty fun to learn.

Go on be a “cool” guy or a “sweet” girl…or you could just do it for fun.

Wait to Buy a Netbook if You Want Hassle Free Windows 7

image A quick piece of advice to University returners who no doubt will be pulled towards netbooks, including the delicious VAIO W-series, is that if you are looking for a painless upgrade to Windows 7 it might be better to wait until October the 22nd before purchasing your new netbook.  October the 22nd in case you didn’t know if the official release date for Windows 7.  I heartily recommend getting Windows 7, it is fantastic, and after using the Release Candidate since it started I would never go back to either XP or Vista.

You can upgrade Windows Vista from your netbook if you like, but how do you normally upgrade an OS?  Via a disk.  How many netbooks have optical disk drives?  Not many.  This means that if you want to upgrade (Vista) or clean install (XP) you will need to know how to install via another technique.  Techniques include installing via flash media by making them bootable, and network installation.  Many step by step instructions are available on line with a quick Google search.  There is even one for booting from flash supplied by Microsoft themselves.

So depending on your IT comfort, ability to follow instructions, and maybe just convenience, it might be better to wait a while before purchasing your new computer, but particularly your netbook in order to get windows 7.

If you are going to install Windows 7 later, this is a nice little application to make bootable flash drives from windows installation disks:

Sony Style Comes To The Netbook Table – W-Series

image Sony have already touched on Netbooks with their P-Series.  However, it was received with very mixed feelings.  No doubt about it the P-series is beautiful but it was too small for a netbook both in screen and keyboard size and was more like a completely over the top pocket organiser than anything.  Pretty though, if I had money to burn I’d buy it just for aesthetics.

HOWEVER NOW Sony has come to the netbook scene with their VAIO Mini W-Series and my god did they perform/deliver/ make me really happy.  The W-Series has specifications up with all the best netbooks but once again Sony have done it again and produced something which just oozes quality and class.  The W-series is definitely worth a think if you are making the jump into the netbook market if you are looking for something that is, yes a bit more expensive, but absolutely gorgeous.

This review will cover the features of the VPCW11S1E  /W/T/P (the three available colour themes)

So lets start with some of the features:

The Ability to Turn Into a Ghost – NEXT: Harry Potter`s Invisible Cloak

image

Currently,  at the University of California, Berkeley, and at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York  the innovation of ‘Carpet Cloaks’ has succeeded to make small objects such as hidden cameras invisible and is currently at the stage of a turning large objects transparent. The next step will be the ability to make us our very own Harry Potter cloak.

Metamaterials “Bend” the Way to Smaller Mobiles with Better Signal

image Metamaterials are materials which have properties which allow them to bend electromagnetic waves to a remarkable level or accuracy.  This technology up until now has been being used to bend visible light to the effort of creating invisibility.  There have been some levels of success in this area but mostly only extremely high frequency electromagnetic waves can exhibit the properties required which shows that “in theory” its totally possible.  However this technology would also be highly effective at other tasks as well, for example, bending the frequency at which you receive phone signal.  The current main problem with this is metamaterials are extremely narrowband whereas phones work over a range of frequencies.  However there is plenty of positive research to combat this problem in the pipeline, indicating this technology may not actually be that far off.

imageSo the aim would be to create broadband metamaterials which would allow one to change the specific frequency at which the manipulation of electromagnetic waves could occur.  Current research has reached the point at which a particular voltage can tune a metamaterial to different frequencies and that that tuning would last for a long period of time.  This means that the production of antennas to different country frequency bands is indeed possible now.  Obviously ideally it would be nice to switch specific frequency at any time however the current solution is certainly one way which this technology could be utilised.

For more details see the full article or journal (if you have access) and maybe read up on the (extremely long) wiki on metamaterials.

Want to Get to Know Someone Better – Technology Acting as your Sixth Sense

clip_image001[7]

I am sure you have all got to the airport in a sweat because you thought you were going to be late; subsequently, to your annoyance your flight has been delayed? Or, remained at the drugstore for 30 minutes, simply trying to decide between the various brands of deodorant? If you said “no” to both, you’re extremely lucky or just organised.  You would however have to agree that we have all met someone who gave us that feeling that they are not quite who they said they are. If only we had a “Sixth Sense” to reduce this wasted time in daily occurrences. clip_image001[5]

Well according to TED Talks currently, Pranav Mistry at MIT university is working on a device which would enable you to obtain this “Sixth Sense” by simply recognising the object and displaying, instantly, the relevant information allowing you to make a quick, correct decision.

The unique piece of technology is built out of the combination of a phone, camera and battery powered projector. The price of this device during research is a mere $350 (meaning later, affordable for students!) The camera recognises your hand gestures via your colour coded finger-nails or caps. It collects the data with the use of the phone then projects onto any surface.

So, can this unthinkable innovation actually solve one of human’s weaknesses? Read more

Desktop Media Centers – “XBMC Media Centre”

imageWith having large amounts of media to hand becoming commonplace amongst most recreational PC users, media centres are being developed all over the place to display our ever expanding collections.  Media centres tend to do the normal thing about listing your media in an “easy to use are access” fashion though a lot now come with extra features such are retrieving movie posters and reviews via IMDB and similar sites.  These extra functions work with varying degrees of success across the board however there is certainly a right, and a wrong choice to make when it comes to deciding which one you will grace with your media mass.  In an effort to help I’m going to run several articles on media centres over the coming weeks in a hope that you’ll try them with me and come to a conclusion as to the best one at the end.

Here’s a rundown on the particularly slick “XBMC Media player”.
